The hexagonal dome stands as a remarkable blend of lighting design, ecological responsibility, and educational outreach. Developed in partnership with the Royal Entomological Society, its design is inspired by the intricate patterns of insect compound eyes, particularly those of flies.

The lighting design emphasizes sustainability and biodiversity, focusing on reducing light pollution and supporting the well-being of the dome’s insect residents. By using red and deep amber lights, the dome ensures that its illumination aligns with the natural biological rhythms of insects, utilizing wavelengths that are less disruptive to them.

This considerate approach minimizes the negative impact on insect activities while creating an inviting and visually appealing environment for visitors. The dome functions as an outdoor classroom where visitors, including school groups and the general public, can learn about the essential role insects play in maintaining a healthy ecosystem. The lighting design enhances this educational experience, fostering a serene and meditative space that connects people with nature. The dichroic hexagonal windows produce vibrant color displays, with multifaceted reflections that enrich the dome’s interior, offering a sensory experience that elevates the space after dark.

Beyond the dome, existing lighting columns were re-purposed with gobo projectors to cast insect-inspired patterns onto the ground. The surrounding paths are seamlessly integrated into the landscape, inviting exploration and promoting a harmonious relationship with the natural world. Inside the dome, integrated lighting within the base and joinery provides subtle accent lighting that encourages social interaction and learning. The central table, illuminated by soft amber linear lighting, draws visitors in and creates a warm, welcoming focal point.

This project exemplifies innovative lighting design, ecological harmony, and sustainable practices. It respects the rhythms of the natural world while fostering human connection, serving as both a beacon of environmental stewardship and a symbol of creative reuse. By highlighting the intricate beauty of insect eye patterns and promoting biodiversity through thoughtful design choices, the dome demonstrates how lighting can enhance the environment without compromising its integrity. This project is not just a work of art; it is a living, breathing example of how lighting design can elevate both form and function, creating a space where education, sustainability, and beauty converge.
