SHH Architecture & Interiors, in collaboration with Ideaworks, have completed a state-of-the-art private Music Pavilion, designed to deliver an exceptional listening experience and fulfil the aspirations of a true audiophile. The result of a close collaboration, the project exemplifies the seamless fusion of architectural innovation and superior acoustic performance.
Set beside an existing greenhouse, the 150 sqm pavilion is a contemporary reimagining of traditional geometry, integrating effortlessly with the existing property. SHH achieved this through careful consideration of materiality and scale. The use of Japanese charred timber and Corten steel brings richness and warmth, contrasting beautifully with expansive glazed openings. A living wall and green roof foster biodiversity while anchoring the structure in its natural surroundings.
Lighting played a pivotal role in shaping the pavilion’s identity. Ideaworks developed a layered lighting strategy to suit the multifunctional nature of the space – ideal for working, entertaining, and deep listening. A bespoke 32-piece Wonderglass pendant display creates a sculptural centrepiece, casting ripple-like shadows evocative of sound waves. Miniature track lighting, integrated into custom joinery, highlights the client’s artefact collection with precision and discretion.
Lighting Concept:
Light drops from above – thirty-two glass pendants ripple in a measured soundwave across the room. Made by Venetian artisans, they function less as decoration and more as instruments, translating movement into light. Around them, ancient artefacts sit in the joinery, each defined by its own contained pocket of light.
The building itself carries weight, corten steel, green roof, a mass that holds the interior in a sheltered, almost subterranean calm. At the centre, a single samurai sits within a steady column of light, grounding the room as sound and light swirl around.
