The Diamond – A shimmering new icon for Amsterdam

At one of Amsterdam’s most iconic locations – Leidseplein – The Diamond rises as a striking new landmark. Once home to the well-known “Heineken Hoek,” the building has been completely transformed into an architectural statement. Designed by MVSA Architects and brought to life through the creative lighting expertise of Livingprojects in partnership with Signify and Pharos Controls, The Diamond combines architecture and light into a unique urban spectacle.

Inspired by the brilliance of a cut diamond, the building’s façade features angular glass panels that shimmer by day and glow by night. The lighting, however, is not about spectacle – it’s about subtlety. Integrated invisibly within the structure, the carefully placed fixtures cast a clean white glow from within, accentuating the building’s geometric design without distracting from it. The result is an elegant interplay between light and form that honours the building’s design intent while adding an extra layer of depth after dark.

This lighting approach was guided by a clear philosophy: enhance, not overwhelm. With a premium hotel housed inside, the lighting design had to deliver architectural presence on the outside, while ensuring total comfort for guests within. No visual clutter, no light pollution. Just a calm, controlled glow that lets the architecture shine.

This project exemplifies Livingprojects’ core philosophy: to create 100% goosebump-worthy experiences. We believe in the transformative power of light. Not just to illuminate, but to enchant, energize, and connect. The Diamond is more than a lighting project; it’s a piece of urban theatre that sparks emotion and elevates everyday surroundings into something extraordinary.

Beyond its visual impact, The Diamond also makes a strong case for sustainable innovation. By integrating energy-efficient LED lighting and smart control, the installation minimizes environmental impact while maximizing creative potential. It’s proof that sustainable design and spectacular storytelling can go hand in hand.

The Diamond is more than just a building. It’s a contemporary tribute to Amsterdam’s diamond heritage and a new icon in its skyline. Proof that when light and architecture align with purpose, the result is pure brilliance.
