The update of Sofitel’s Canadian crown jewel marks its first major renovation since opening in 2002. Our mandate went from the lobby all the way to the rooms, including the restaurant, bar, conference rooms and gym. Our main challenge was to harmonize diverse lighting environments across the public areas all while keeping them functional. This complexity was due to varying finishes, textures, volumes, and natural light conditions.
This lighting concept invites guests on a sensorial journey. Residential touches evoke a sense of home, while local artworks highlight Montreal’s art de vivre. A layered lighting strategy defines spaces, creates ambiance, and celebrates art, giving coherence to the guest experience.
Lighting is seamlessly integrated into the architecture for visual comfort, reducing glare, enhancing contrast, maintaining a cohesive atmosphere. Deeply recessed pinhole luminaires, floor and table lamps, LED strips are all precisely placed for visual ease and balance. Details were carefully developed to preserve contrast without harsh transitions, resulting in a warm, inviting ambiance.
Close collaboration with the interior designers, engineers, and contractors ensured design integrity while meeting structural and budget constraints.
A 0–10V dimming system (dimmable to 1%) delivers flexible control across public spaces. This system enables smooth transitions between daytime and evening moods, enhancing guest comfort. This project also aligns with the brand’s Planet 21 environmental targets for zero carbon and zero waste.
Lighting zones are finely tuned to optimize ambiance with minimal manual input. Low standby energy consumption supports overall energy efficiency goals. High-efficiency LED fixtures, all dimmable and sensor-controlled in low-use areas, offer excellent colour rendering and are fully replaceable.
Beyond aesthetics and efficiency, the hotel showcases Montreal’s creative spirit and embraces sustainable practices, fostering a deeper connection between guests and place and positioning the hotel as a cultural ambassador the city’s Golden Square Mile.
