‘La Comédie takes centre stage’

At nightfall, the heart of Montpellier is reinvented. Place de la Comédie, a veritable open-air stage, is adorned with new lighting that combines theatrical poetry, heritage enhancement and sober, welcoming spaces for strolling. The Esplanade also takes on a soft glow, perfect for evening strolls.

A renewed connection between the Comédie and the Esplanade:

The lighting was designed to create visual and sensory continuity, using a common typology: masts composed of a multitude of projectors. On a different scale on the Esplanade, they help to enliven the space while bathing it in a soft, non-dazzling light that only illuminates the ground and preserves the tree canopy from light pollution.

Theatrical lighting:

Designed as an extension of the Opera stage, this new lighting brings the square to life. Playful lighting effects – echoing scenes from the Opera – enliven the space and invite passers-by to become spectators… or actors in suspended moments. The large masts, which have been preserved and refitted, provide both functional and scenographic lighting. Thanks to evolving lighting scenarios, the square changes atmosphere throughout the evening and even as the night progresses.

Montpellier’s blue signature:

True to the city’s heritage, the blue light designed by Yann Kersalé has been renovated. It once again illuminates the square’s tall masts and now occasionally highlights the fountain.

A heritage revealed gently:

All the historic façades of the square are illuminated by overhead lighting, revealing their volumes and details. This light, projected from top to bottom, respects the darkness of the night sky and preserves the peaceful atmosphere of Montpellier evenings.
