The NTT Pavilion dissolves binary oppositions—self and other, human and nature, real and digital—into a seamless continuum, where the behaviors of people, nature, and digital elements intermingle like particles of light. The pavilion aims to awaken visitors’ memories and emotions, creating an enduring experience of Architecture Draped in Emotion.
Located along the coastline, the site hosts four square structures arranged in a dispersed layout designed to allow a pleasant airflow, guided by airflow analysis. Carbon fibre wire structures, contributing to low-carbon design, link the buildings like delicate threads, generating intermediate spaces where the boundary between inside and outside becomes ambiguous. Within this spatial arrangement, light serves as a mediator, weaving the behaviours of humans, nature, and digital elements into a continuous and intertwined experience.
Architecture Draped in Emotion emerges through light, saturating the space while interacting with visitors’ emotions and guiding them into an immersive experience. The lighting design adopts the theme of “expressing vitality,” treating light not as a static element but as a responsive, evolving, and resonant presence that animates the pavilion with life.
Inside, carbon fiber wires are arranged like a forest in seemingly random patterns, softly illuminated by focused downlights that reveal their axes. When visitors touch these wires, subtle vibrations trigger corresponding light and sound, visualizing human behaviour as a luminous expression. Outside, two types of fabric make delicate natural movements visible. A silver fabric, positioned slightly away from the buildings, allows wind to pass through, creating a dappled, tree-like light. Line lights at the base of the silver fabric illuminate it, and independent dimming allows its colour to softly bleed into the surrounding space.
Along the exterior walls, thirty colourful fabrics translate the surprise, delight, and wonder of visiting children into colour, expressing the diversity of human emotion. Through dimmed lighting, the light of emotion that shines through these fabrics changes its expression daily.
Furthermore, visitors’ emotions—surprise, joy, and smiles—are captured by cameras and analyzed in real time by AI. The exterior lighting responds dynamically, extending internal emotional states beyond the building’s boundaries and transforming them into light that flows outward into the surrounding space.
The light of human behaviour, the light of natural phenomena, and the light of digital responses—all these diverse behaviours are woven together through integrated lighting orchestration. As they overlap and resonate, the pavilion becomes simultaneously singular and plural. Plural yet one. This creates a new and beautiful environment. The experience lingers in visitors’ memories, ephemeral yet profoundly real, leaving an enduring impression that transcends the moment of the visit.
