As part of the 2024 rejuvenation of Tokyo’s iconic Shin-Marunouchi Building, the open-air terrace on the 7th floor, known as (marunouchi) House, underwent a remarkable transformation centered on a masterfully crafted lighting design. Overlooking the historic Tokyo Station building, (marunouchi) House is a dynamic space featuring unique boutique shops and a dining area where visitors can enjoy meals and drinks late into the night, enveloped in an atmosphere of understated elegance.

The lighting design plays a pivotal role in shaping the terrace’s inviting and memorable ambiance. Bespoke table lamps, thoughtfully crafted with hidden light sources, are placed at each table to provide intimate illumination. These lamps incorporate a small, integrated spotlight to delicately highlight the food, ensuring the visual appeal of every dish while preserving the warm, intimate setting. The hidden design eliminates glare, focusing attention on the dining experience itself.

Subtle yet striking accent lighting adds depth and dimension throughout the terrace. Elegant bespoke glass fixtures using recycled glass and LED source and indirect lighting enhance the extraordinary atmosphere, while column uplights and tree uplights emphasize architectural and natural elements. All these features are wirelessly controllable, allowing for seamless customization to suit different occasions and times of day. In particular, the system enables candle-like warm lighting ranging from 1900K to 2200K during late evening hours, creating a cozy, enchanting ambiance reminiscent of soft candlelight. This fine-tuned control allows the space to transition effortlessly from a lively dinner environment to a serene, sophisticated bar setting.

The lighting also incorporates flexibility for special events, introducing pastel-coloured accents to energize the terrace with vibrant hues. This adaptive approach ensures the space remains versatile, meeting the needs of both casual diners and event organizers looking to host memorable experiences.

The carefully layered lighting scheme merges functionality with artistry, elevating the design to a new level. The combination of bespoke fixtures, wireless control, and attention to detail in light placement creates an environment that feels intimate yet grand, lively yet soothing. The seamless integration of lighting with the terrace’s natural and architectural elements celebrates the spirit of Tokyo’s nightlife, offering an elevated experience for all visitors.

By marrying cutting-edge technology with timeless design principles, (marunouchi) House stands as a testament to how lighting can transform not just a space, but the way people experience it. The result is a terrace that is not only visually stunning but also emotionally resonant, ensuring it remains a cherished destination in the heart of Tokyo for years to come.
