India’s Largest Lighting Workshop at Acharya Nagarjuna University

From February 5th to 8th, 2024, Acharya Nagarjuna University (ANU) in Guntur, India, hosted India’s premier lighting workshop.

The three-day, hands-on program, organized by Light & Beyond LLP and ANU faculty, aimed to educate and inspire future architects.

200 architecture students from the first to fifth years participated in the workshop, divided into five groups assigned to five meticulously selected sites on the 300-acre campus. Two statues of esteemed scholars and past presidents complemented the sites.

Each group was supported by lighting vendors who provided state-of-the-art luminaires and industry insights.

They included Changi Lighting, Lazzure Lighting, Plus Light Tech, Studio Plus, Gojis, Balika, Raybright Technologies, and Luxus Lighting.

The workshop began with an interactive session on lighting design fundamentals, led by renowned lighting designers Tejas Doshi and Martina Frattura.
Day 2 focused on transforming concepts into reality, with students gaining practical experience in lighting design.

Students were assigned sites and introduced to lighting vendors. Each vendor demonstrated their fixtures, and students had time to conceptualize and present their designs to workshop heads. After receiving feedback, they had time to install the fixtures.

The final day was a celebration of learning and creativity. Each group presented their concepts and installations to an audience. The workshop showcased the efficacy of collaboration and hands-on learning, transforming ordinary spaces into aesthetically pleasing environments.

This workshop empowered students to transcend conventional lighting practices and explore its impact on architecture. By integrating theory with practical experience, Light & Beyond LLP and ANU provided students with an invaluable experience that will shape their careers in design.

In India’s rapidly evolving lighting industry, initiatives like these bridge the gap between academic knowledge and practical application, ensuring that the next generation of architects understands the transformative potential of light.

The workshop was expertly co-organized by ANU faculties Suhita Jala and Komal, who ensured that the event ran smoothly and effectively, and it concluded with a legacy of knowledge, inspiration, and appreciation for lighting design.
