Light Beam is an innovative and immersive lighting installation developed for the London Disruptia event in 2024. The project was born from a unique partnership between Ayrton, a leader in advanced lighting solutions, and WSP, a global engineering and consulting firm. Conceptualised and executed by WSP Lighting team and Paul Johnson, the installation combined artistry and engineering to create a memorable, interactive experience that resonated with the event’s disruptive theme.

The installation featured a minimalist design, relying on fundamental elements such as smoke, mirrors and narrow beam luminaires to captivate and engage the audience. Participants were invited to interact with the installation, disrupting and manipulating the light beams to craft their own 3D light sculptures. This approach transformed the role of light from a passive medium into a dynamic tool for creative exploration. The installation emphasised the tangible qualities of light, offering a fresh perspective on its physicality and potential.

The Light Beam installation utilised a carefully curated material palette that underscored simplicity and efficiency. Twelve mirrors mounted on tripods were arranged strategically to enable participants to redirect and shape the light beams. These were complemented by three high-precision lighting projectors, which produced narrow, concentrated beams that served as the foundation for the interactive experience. A haze machine was employed to enhance the visibility and texture of the light beams, adding depth and dimensionality to the space. A disco ball further enriched the visual impact, introducing dynamic movement and playful textures that encouraged exploration.

The project was designed to align with a tight timeline, requiring a setup that could be completed within a single day. Despite this constraint, the installation achieved remarkable results, showcasing the ingenuity and adaptability of the team. This efficient execution reflected a clear understanding of both technical and logistical challenges, ensuring that the installation was ready to impress attendees from the moment the event began.

At its core, Light Beam championed the concept of interaction and disruption. Unlike traditional installations, where audiences passively observe, this project placed participants at the centre, empowering them to become co-creators. This hands-on engagement was a deliberate design choice, reinforcing the event’s focus on disruption and innovation. The minimalist, lo-fi approach highlighted the raw beauty of light and shadow, proving that simplicity can be as impactful as technological complexity. The collaboration between Ayrton and WSP was another standout aspect, demonstrating how inter-disciplinary partnerships can lead to extraordinary outcomes.

Impact and Significance:

Light Beam left a lasting impression on its audience, sparking conversations about the creative potential of light. It showcased the transformative power of lighting design, turning functional elements into interactive tools that inspire curiosity and engagement. The installation’s ability to blend technical precision with emotional resonance made it a compelling centrepiece for the event.

By transforming light into an interactive and participant-driven medium, Light Beam redefined the boundaries of lighting design. Its thoughtful simplicity, collaborative execution and powerful engagement created a unique experience that resonated deeply with attendees. The installation serves as a benchmark for how creativity and innovation can shape the future of experiential lighting design, inspiring new possibilities for the industry.
