Lowering the impact of manufacturing: revisiting arguably the most ubiquitous luminaire, the downlight.

LI.DL is the result of the Stoane Lighting team seeking better ways to make the best equipment possible whilst doing the least harm. It is recast in our in-house forge from unavoidable workshop offcuts.

Designed with purpose, the LI.DL, first seen at LiGHT24 and featured in the COOLKITLIST, has an impressive specification:

907lm initial at 3000K using 90CRI 9.8mm COB
805lm initial at 3000K using 95CRI 9.8mm COB
Full range of optics from 17º – 58º
6.5W at 200mA

Following preliminary environmental Life Cycle Assessment, we can see that there is an impact reduction by avoiding the traditional recycling route. TM66 shows Excellent circularity and TM65.2 results show 10.86 kgCO2e.

We believe we have created a luminaire that represents a significant step forward in responsible lighting manufacture. By empowering specifiers to only ever specify a new luminaire when it is needed, we’ve worked to ensure that every product exists for a purpose.

As a minimum, all of our aluminium waste is dutifully collected and sent for recycling. While Stoane Lighting’s is sourced as close to HQ as possible, contains 70-90% recycled content, and is infinitely recyclable, we knew we could go a step further. With our innovative use of one of the oldest known metalworking processes, traditional recycling can be an avoidable journey and a seized opportunity.

Using renewable energy and without sacrificing quality, we’ve successfully reformed our waste aluminium into new products with sandcasting and gravity die casting techniques. Already, some products and components in our range benefit from this process. But to fully capitalise on the opportunity, we needed a solution with scale.

By pairing our forging technique with practical, high-quality engineering, the LI.DL was born: a product designed to reduce waste while delivering exceptional performance.
