Located on the secluded island of Bodufushi in Raa Atoll, Joali Being Resort is the first retreat of its kind in the Maldives. The concept of the resort is based on biophilic design principles. It is where guests reconnect with nature and start their journey of rediscovery and renewal.
The arrival lounge, Gate of Zero sculpture designed by Seckin Pirim, welcomes you to Joali Being. Inspired by the whirling dervishes of Turkey, this artwork is lit with surface mounted light sources located at precise locations to reveal the dynamism of the beautiful architecture.
The resort includes 68 guest villas, culinary spaces and significant amount of transformational places dotted around the island.
The lighting is design to accent the features of vernacular architecture in creating flow of brightness from building to building using the landscape in between to reflect the lights.
Main swimming pool becomes a feature reflection pool in the evening reflecting lights from the surrounded trees and buildings. In addition, shimmering fibre optics lighting integrated in the base resembles the reflection of twinkling starts in the sky.
Similar approach is used to the entrance of Areka, SPA, where floating step stones are lit from the reflection of plant lights. The uplighting to the interior bead screens adds an additional dimension to the magical entrance.
The trees on the main circulation roads are selectively lit with uplights to help guests navigate but also creating visual interests such as silhouetting effects, moonlighting or showing the textures of exotic plants.
Outdoor dining spaces are lit with decorative floor lanterns, battery operated table lamps or decorative shades integral to balustrades.
The gardens of guest villas are illuminated as an extension of the interiors with subtle brightness mostly comes from the lighting of the selective plants or architectural features such as outdoor cabanas, showers.
Joali Being is committed to every aspects of sustainability as part of their operation. This has direct consequences in lighting in terms of lighting loads. Therefore all lighting sources used for the project are carefully selected from high efficacy LED luminaires.
