Located on the secluded island of Bodufushi in Raa Atoll, Joali Being Resort is the first retreat of its kind in the Maldives. The concept of the resort is based on biophilic design principles. There are 68 villas with muted yet palatial interiors reflecting the natural surroundings.

Lighting in the form of concealed linear LED’s is used to enhance the sumptuous ceilings. This is accompanied with low level lighting which is integrated in the furniture, decorative luminaires and floor recessed uplights. The floor recessed uplights are used to accent one of the important features of the interior, the screens, which divide the bedroom and bathroom spaces.

The restaurant, Flow, with its tall domed ceilings, is an open plan interactive dining space featuring three different kitchens. With a dynamic lighting that changes colour and intensity during the course of day, it continuously evolves in offering unique experiences to the guests.

Accent lighting is used to accentuate artwork and architectural features, forming a space that induces pleasant emotions.

The large decorative pendants and battery-operated table lamps complete the overall mood.

The adjacent dining space, Mojo, is lit with decorative pendants and concealed linear uplights, which emphasize the beautiful vernacular architecture.

With wellbeing at its core, Joali Being offers whole host of transformational spaces located across the island, including: a hydrotherapy hall, a sensory deprivation room, a Russian banya, a sound therapy hall and Aktar, the resort’s herbology centre.

The fundamental objective in lighting these spaces is creating the perception of weightlessness. The light sources, whether they are downlights, linear lights or fibreoptic lights, are used to work with the interior of the architecture to make it appear weightless and floating.

Joali Being is committed to every aspects of sustainability as part of their operation. This has direct consequences in lighting in terms of lighting loads. Therefore all lighting sources used for the project are carefully selected from high efficacy LED luminaires.
