Elektra’s lighting design for the 15 Old Bailey Hotel project is a testament to the transformative power of light. This Grade II listed site, originally built as a hotel in 1874, has been reimagined through a unique lighting scheme that enhances its historic charm while providing a modern, inviting atmosphere.

The façade, the first impression of the hotel, has been accentuated with spotlight and linear grazers, highlighting the ornate form and materiality of the building. The use of concealed soft warm light on the first floor window bays creates a silhouette effect on the ornate balustrades, while narrow beam uplights between windows and columns enhance the form and texture of the stonework. This careful illumination strategy not only preserves the heritage status of the building but also creates a warm and inviting feel for guests.

Inside, the lobby is transformed from a transit area into a warm, welcoming space. Bespoke decorative lights at the reception desk and a large feature bar draw guests in, while the warm low level of lighting adds a human scale to the space. The Leydi Restaurant transitions from a bright, bustling breakfast spot to a soft, ambiently lit sophisticated evening venue, thanks to a mixture of decorative and architectural lighting and an automated lighting control system.

The underground cocktail bar, Black Lacquer, inspired by a speakeasy Tokyo record bar, showcases the versatility of the lighting design. The ability to transition from a well-lit function space for events to a dim, intimate ambient lit space is a testament to the thoughtful design. The concealed lighting within the joinery box brings the vinyl records on display to life, adding depth and richness to the space.

In the guestrooms, a balanced combination of focused lighting, elegant decorative fixtures, and accentuated architectural elements create a sophisticated and inviting ambience. The concealed integrated lighting accents key features, while the soft ambient glow from the decorative fittings creates a warmer, more intimate atmosphere. An intelligent yet cost effect control system allows for the creation of automated lighting scenes, enhancing the guest experience.

In summary, the lighting design for the 15 Old Bailey Hotel project by Elektra is a masterclass in how lighting design can add a new, meaningful layer to a space. From the eye-grabbing first impression of the façade, through the relaxing and warm lobby, to the hidden glamour of the cocktail bar, the lighting design improves, enhances, defines, and creates a memorable experience and an emotional connection to the space. This extraordinary project showcases how lighting can transform a space, creating an immersive experience that draws guests into the rich tapestry of old London while embracing modern technology and international stylings.
