In a project that has been almost four years in design and over two years in construction, a new lighting installation has transformed the appearance of one of the most majestic of English cathedrals.

Ely Cathedral, known as The Ship of The Fens sits proudly above the low-lying landscape with its newly illuminated Octagon Tower visible for miles. The relighting of the tower marked the first phase of this transformative project, followed by the complete relighting of the cathedral’s interior. Spanning every part of the worship areas, the vast nave roof space and emergency lighting, this remarkable undertaking showcases a meticulous and thoughtful lighting design, researched and delivered by CBG Light Perceptions. The result is a lighting scheme that stands as a beacon of design innovation, and energy efficiency.

At its heart lies a carefully crafted lighting design which recognises the historic significance as well as the ongoing purpose of the cathedral. CBG Light Perceptions consulted with the Dean and clergy, music department, events teams and operational staff to understand the many different ways in which new lighting was needed to support and elevate the life of the cathedral. The result enhances the liturgy, music and public engagement of the cathedral as well as highlighting architectural details that have been unseen for centuries.

The design uses high-quality LED light sources with luminaires from leading manufacturers, combined with a reprogrammable preset control system that also allows for manual controls and fine-tuning. With regular setting and simple-to-use controls, the system achieves a perfect balance between energy savings and exceptional lighting performance.

Delivering a lighting solution for a building of such historical significance requires a diligent and well-considered integration of modern technology within the historic fabric of the building. CBG ensured that the lighting design not only met contemporary energy standards but also respectfully responded to the brief for a dynamic, flexible system to reinforce the mission of the cathedral in its many forms.

The lighting upgrade forms a part of Ely Cathedral’s journey to achieving its environmental goals, which include a 42% reduction in carbon emissions since 2019 and the Church of England’s commitment to reaching net zero by 2030. CBG approached the project with a profound respect for its rich heritage while embracing cutting-edge technology. The result of both the lighting installation and other pivotal cathedral initiatives is the prestigious recognition of The Gold Eco Church Award from A Rocha UK. Ely is only the third cathedral in the UK to meet the prestigious standard.

The success of the project demonstrates how thoughtful lighting design can harmonise with conservation. Ely Cathedral perfectly demonstrates how historic buildings can lead the way in sustainability without compromising their cultural and spiritual significance.

As an independent, sustainability-driven building services consultancy specialising in low-carbon engineering design, MEP services, sustainability, and specialist lighting design, CBG delivers excellence across a broad range of sectors, striving to create better buildings that benefit both their occupants and the environment.
