Introduction

21 Moorfields, Deutsche Bank’s UK headquarters, is a commercial development designed by architects Wilkinson Eyre and structural engineer Robert Byrd, the project is anengineering marvel, resembling a bridge that spans the complex train interchange below. It also contributes to London’s “Culture Mile,” a cultural district stretching from Farringdonto Moorgate.

Design Narrative

Wilkinson Eyre’s design narrative emphasizes an honest expression of the project’s extraordinary constraints. Rather than simply sitting on trusses, the building integrates its ownstructure as a “living bridge.” The dramatic steel trusses, as tall as the building itself, form its defining architectural feature. These trusses, with their striking angles, were highlightedto underscore the tectonic aesthetic of the design.

The lighting systems employ high-efficiency LED technology with advanced control systems, including motion sensors and dimming capabilities, to minimize energy consumptionduring off-peak hours. Cooler 4000K lighting accentuates the trusses’ bluish-grey finish, contrasting with warmer 3000K ambient lighting. Custom mounting fins, developed as part ofthe steel structure, were used to discreetly place luminaires, ensuring they remained hidden while achieving optimal lighting. Detailed 3D assessments, trials, and mock-ups helpedrefine the positions for fine-tuning the illumination. The design adheres to stringent sustainability guidelines, aligning with the City of London’s lighting policies.

The external lighting design considers the neighbouring residential development, directing illumination towards the main approach from Moorgate while leaving the side facingresidents in darkness. This ensures the architectural trusses are silhouetted against the glow of interior lighting, balancing aesthetic impact with sensitivity to the local community.

The interior and exterior lighting are seamlessly connected, using lit architectural elements such as the Bow trusses in the ceiling. The lighting effect transitions from the exteriorfaçade to the building’s reception, creating continuity and reinforcing the building’s design language. Within the reception lobby, the strongest accents are placed on the structuralelements, maintaining the emphasis on their prominence and architectural significance.

In Integration with Public Spaces, the project seamlessly integrates with surrounding public spaces, enhancing the pedestrian experience. Elevated pathways, landscaped areas, and thoughtfully illuminated publiczones create a harmonious connection between the building and its urban environment.

Light Art – ‘Nexus’

Nexus, Is a light art installation designed wholy by MBLD, and is a permanent light art installation at the 21 Moorfields Highwalk, contributing to the “Culture Mile.” Inspired by the building’s geometric connections, the artwork weaves vibrant, dynamic threads and connections of light along the Highwalk wall.

Responsive to movement, the installation transitions between cooler and warmer tones based on the frequency of activity. MBLD designed a custom exterior luminaire to achievethe desired RGBW light effects, allowing precise orientation and tilt for an impactful display. The result is a visually engaging and interactive tapestry that connects architecture, landscape, and people.
