Project Overview

Contemporary artist’s studio is situated in a single building within an old factory complex. The studio itself is a squared, fully open space that serves as a versatile vessel for diverse lifestyles, accommodating a rich array of daily routines. This space integrates multiple functions, creating an environment where art and daily life seamlessly intertwine.

Design Concept and Inspiration

The design draws inspiration from an experimental approach to art creation, akin to a chemistry lab. It seeks to integrate artist’s various artistic phases (the ‘Blue Series,’ ‘Black Series,’ ‘Red Series,’ and ‘White Series’) with different spatial contexts. Centered on innovation and integration, the lighting design is deeply aligned with artistic expression. It aims to meet the artist’s practical needs while shaping a space that balances functionality and aesthetic appeal.

Design Innovations and Highlights

Colour-Coded Artistic Journey:

Through the use of different colored lights, the design chronicles key stages of the artist’s career, blending the temporal dimension of art with spatial lighting. This approach imbues the studio with a rich cultural depth.

Meeting Varied Social Needs and Creating Ambiance:

The transformed space adapts effortlessly to diverse social settings. Blue lighting, with its interplay of light and shadow, allows each area to interlace rhythmically, creating an ideal ambience for musical performances. Red lighting provides an immersive experience for social gatherings, delivering a strong visual impact to engage the senses. White lighting is suited to painting sessions and hosting guests, complementing the artist’s ‘White Series’ artworks to evoke a gallery-like atmosphere. This tailored approach highlights the close relationship between lighting design and spatial functionality.

Unique Halo Model Design:

A suspended halo model takes inspiration from brushstrokes in the ‘White Series’ artworks. The upper U-shaped section is designed for linear lighting fixtures, casting light upwards to form a continuous circular glow on the ceiling. This changing colour sequence reflects the artist’s evolving creative phases. A cavity within the centre conceals power cables, maintaining the arc’s pure and fluid appearance while ensuring system safety and stability. The lower inverted U-shape section accommodates a custom-developed magnetic curved track, allowing spotlights to be flexibly attached along the track, thus fulfilling the overall lighting needs of the space.

The Fusion of Light, Space, and Art:

The ‘White Series’ paintings, enveloped in red light, appear vivid and moist, as if the brushstrokes are freshly applied, radiating an intense energy.

In this light-crafted setting, the music played in front of these paintings resonates with the brushstrokes, forming a reciprocal emotional response. At that moment, intangible sound seems to take on a tangible form, perceptible to us.

This harmonious fusion of silence and sound creates an extraordinary sensory experience that transcends conventional boundaries. It invites us to rethink the nature of light and provides new perspectives and inspiration on its multifaceted expressions.
