The city Community Centre “Giant” began its existence in the late 19th – early 20th century. Before becoming a Community Centre, it was known in the city as a cinema with halls for watching silent films and a “Roller Rink ” where residents went roller skating. Now the building operates as a local Community Centre of the small city of Maykop in the Republic of Adygea and accommodates more than 30 activities like drama, singing, dancing, art for children and teenagers, and the lighting project is designed to attract new participants to the Centre.

The main task of the lighting project was to maintain a balance of lighting between the facade of the Community Centre and a rather dark street, where there is no other architectural lighting. Therefore, only individual architectural details of the building are illuminated on the facade, without any wallwashing lighting.

The balance of the composition and restraint in luminance levels are the main supporting points of the project. Our solution uses linear luminaires and spotlights with dimming capability, set to minimum values of luminous flux so that the facade looks harmonious not only at dusk, but also at night with increased contrast on a fairly dark street.

Dynamic lighting is used inside the КИНО (CINEMA) sign on the pediment of the building, denoting its original function – Cinema. Before this, the sign, hidden in the darkness at the top of the building, was practically invisible. Our decision was motivated by the desire to attract residents’ attention to the history of the building through the smooth dynamics of the background of three-dimensional letters, illuminated using a backlight technique.
