Inspired by the famous Arayat mountain range surrounding the airport, Clark Airport’s design imbibes a quiet elegance using muted and a cool colour palette. LPI was tasked to come up with a lighting scheme underlining the simple elegance of the design while creating a distinct lighting identity for the terminal. Through the lighting supporting the architecture, we wanted to excite the passenger and make the experience comfortable so that they will always return to Clark as their airport of choice.

The main lighting feature is at the departure hall where the cathedral ceiling arches are uplit with narrow projectors in 2700 Kelvin. The subtle design showcases the wood grains and apex seen as a rhythmic pattern throughout the check-in halls. This creates a statement as you enter and move through the space. The selection of the general lighting is just as important. Compact and powerful downlights in 3500 Kelvin provided the required 300 lux and complimented the cool finishes of the terminal while not disturbing the wood arches accent lighting. The layering of colour temperature, careful selection of visually comfortable fittings, and seamless integration with the architecture tied everything up together.

As the passenger deplanes, the link bridge is softly lit for a pleasant transition into the terminal building. The arrival concourse lighting was laid out in a staggered pattern so that the space will look more interesting. In spite of the asymmetric arrangement, we were still able to achieve the high uniformity requirements that the airport guidelines required.

Sustainability is also at the heart of the design since the terminal is LEED certified. We spaced the fixtures as far as possible so we would have minimum number of fixtures to reach the required illumination. Each section of the airport was well- thought of considering different tasks and scenarios that would take place and consideration for materials and finishes. The lighting design was always guided by giving the passenger the best experience. The project’s success is a result of years of close collaboration with the client, lead architects, and design team.
