‘Beating Heart’ was transplanted into one of Teesside’s largest disused buildings for two weeks in October 2021 as an extraordinary living artwork which introduced theatrical magic to a stage of brutalist architecture. An attempt to create a visual and tangible link between human life and urban infrastructure, the installation cut through the beige fuzz of the everyday and encouraged thousands to look beyond the prescribed purpose of spaces, people and things and imagine a more fluid and exciting future.

Installed as a system of DMX light units, the work used the existing window layout as a pixel matrix to animate a dynamic beating heart sequence symbolic of the diverse life and energy spread throughout our metropolis.

‘Beating Heart Middlesbrough’ is the fourth in a series of artworks following Light Night Leeds 2017, Spinningfields Manchester 2018 and Canary Wharf Winter Lights 2019.
