aimara.studio is a wellness sanctuary in Lisbon where lighting becomes a calibration tool for the senses, guiding its members from the intensity of urban life toward inner focus. The design challenge was to create an immersive sensory experience, fostering calm, recovery, and bodily awareness through light.
Rather than adhering to conventional circadian lighting models, the lighting concept embraces a philosophy of gradual deceleration, applicable throughout the day. Natural daylight floods the street-facing Juicery, then progressively softens as it filters through the entrance hall to changing areas, and separately reaches the Functional Gym through a glass-brick partition wall. This choreographed distribution of light encourages members to reset their senses and gently detach from the exterior world.
The Juicery functions as a transient space between aimara’s sanctuary and Lisbon’s streets. During daytime, brighter lighting complements abundant natural light, preparing visitors for the more subdued members’ areas beyond. At night, this relationship subtly reverses: artificial lighting reduces, allowing the Juicery to become comparatively darker than the members’ areas, easing the transition back toward exterior darkness.
Faced with limited resources, we prioritised quality over quantity, investing in fewer, better-executed lighting solutions. Beyond three recessed spotlights and a couple of concealed LED strips, all functional lighting is simultaneously decorative.
The signature element is a bespoke system combining high-quality linear diffused light with chrome-plated metal sheets bent by local artisans. This fixture became the spatial thread throughout the main areas, camouflaging itself by reflecting adjacent surfaces, varied ceiling textures, and wall finishes, creating a dynamic interplay between light source and environment.
Wall sconces and some of the pendants were assembled from recycled materials and assorted pieces sourced from local markets through a meticulous hunt. Each fixture was tested on-site and transformed through a creative re-use process into a focal point of warmth and character.
This approach embodies our definition of sustainability: thorough material research, optimisation of local resources, and prioritising local and traditional craftsmanship. Raw materials – metal, paper, warm colour temperatures – honour the studio’s ethos inspired by nature’s elements and ancestral forms. The lighting does not simply illuminate; it becomes part of aimara’s language of sensory reawakening – where beauty emerges not from perfection, but from origin, instinct, and nature unfiltered. A partnership with a local art gallery brought contemporary art to flood the studio space, adhering to aimara’s ethos of supporting community and local craft, and the lighting design honours this spirit.
Within a constrained budget, the lighting transforms a former commercial space into an environment that actively supports wellness practices. The space has become integral to aimara’s brand identity: members consistently notice a soothing atmosphere and a sense of calmness deriving from the integrated lighting experience.
