5 St. Philips Place sits at the heart of Birmingham’s business district and features 67,000 sq ft of CAT A office space across 5 floors, including mixed use amenity spaces. Working together with 5 Plus Architects, the lighting design team at Cundall were asked to create a vibrant lighting scheme which resonated with the building architecture and new interior design themes.

The reception space sees a layered lighting approach, with discreet wall grazing to enhance the textured wall surfaces and integrated linear luminaires that wrap around the wall and ceilings to help define the breakout zones. Carefully considered decorative wall and floor lamps bring a more intimate touch to the soft seating areas, complimenting the wood tones of the banquettes and joinery with a warm lighting temperature.

At the entrance, a bespoke pendant feature was designed to reflect the shapes of the art deco metal work on the external door frame – also featured within the interior design as a recurrent motif. The pendant gives a sense of scale to the double-height lobby, without impeding views outward.

The principal of the lighting design for all areas of the building was to respect and align with the building architecture. The open office floors feature clean lines of linear luminaires, suspended flush alongside the acoustic rafts for a minimal and seamless aesthetic. The luminaire positions were coordinated with the window mullions to create a sense of harmony.
