A disused shopfront on Stockport’s historic Underbank was temporarily transformed into an immersive exploration of light, material, and space. The project, titled ‘Hidden’, brought together Artin Light, Kelsall Architects, Piers Henry Furniture, and lighting specialists Robe/Anolis to reimagine the dormant interior as a dynamic study into illumination and form.
The installation began with a simple question: how can light and materiality reanimate forgotten architecture?
Mirrored steel forms, crafted by Piers Henry Furniture, interacted with moving-head phosphor discharge lamps to create fluid caustic projections that moved across brick, timber, and steel. The result was a constantly shifting environment where light revealed hidden geometries and textures within the building’s raw fabric.
Freed from commercial constraints, the team approached the space as an experimental laboratory for light. Techniques drawn from stagecraft—most notably the use of haze—allowed the path and movement of light to become visible, transforming it from illumination into a tangible material.
Rooted in collaboration between practitioners from Stockport and Macclesfield, the project reflected the North West’s growing network of creative industries and cross-disciplinary practice.
Existing for just two nights before redevelopment, ‘Hidden’ demonstrated how light can transform the perception of place—inviting new ways of seeing, and reimagining how dormant spaces might come alive again.
