Villa Bell’Aspetto, part of the historic Borghese estate, is a remarkable example of a historic garden where natural landscape, botany, and architecture merge harmoniously in a setting overlooking the sea. The villa stands on a dominant hilltop, offering breathtaking panoramic views — from which its name “Bell’Aspetto” (“Beautiful View”) derives, referring to the extraordinary scenery enjoyed from the property.
Built in the 17th century, the villa is surrounded by an extensive park of approximately 41 hectares, representing a refined example of the Italian Renaissance garden. Symmetrical avenues, geometric flower beds, and hedges of boxwood and laurel define its formal structure. This ordered layout is enriched by medieval and romantic influences, expressed through aromatic plants, fruit trees, and exotic species such as palms.
The lighting design for Villa Bell’Aspetto aims to harmonize architectural and landscape aesthetics with the nighttime experience of the outdoor spaces. The design approach is guided by deep respect for the natural environment and for the flora and fauna inhabiting the park.
Lighting choices are based on a delicate balance between light and shadow, with carefully calibrated intensity levels and color temperatures to preserve the ecosystem and ensure discreet integration into the context — with no visual impact either during the day or at night. The luminaires blend seamlessly into the landscape, supporting the narrative of the place without altering its identity.
Light becomes a poetic instrument, enhancing the intrinsic qualities of the site and transforming gardens and façade into evocative settings for evening visits and performances. The goal is to reveal hidden perspectives and details that may go unnoticed during daylight, guiding views and framing moments of beauty.
In this way, light takes on a narrative and immersive role, accompanying visitors along the pathways, shaping atmospheres, adding spatial depth, and evoking emotion.
This project is not merely a technical intervention, but an act of care and enhancement — a lighting design that restores depth and poetry to the space, preserving even at night the “beautiful aspect” that has made the villa renowned through the centuries.
