This landscape lighting design transforms a series of interconnected gardens within a larger estate into a cohesive, immersive experience, where each space is illuminated to highlight its unique character while maintaining visual harmony across the property.

At the centre of the estate, the formal water feature and cypress tree garden anchor the main entrance. Tiered fountains are illuminated from fixtures beneath each cascading bowl, animating droplets through reflections and refractions that bring movement and sparkle to the landscape. Perimeter uplighting along Italian cypress emphasises their vertical rhythm, guiding the eye upon arrival and departure, while subtle pathway lighting reinforces symmetry and balance—ensuring safety without diminishing visual impact after dark. High-canopy downlights and complementary uplighting reveal the textures of the surrounding trees, creating depth, scale, and a sense of architectural order across the central garden.

Off to the side of the main entrance, an intimate globe sculpture garden offers a quiet counterpoint. Soft illumination of the central globe draws the eye while delicate uplighting accentuates surrounding tree ferns, their fronds guiding attention outward and then gently back again. Slender Italian cypress provides vertical contrast, while a nearby redwood’s textured bark and root flare are revealed through high grazing downlights, preserving the tree’s natural form while adding subtle vitality.

The estate’s architecture is integrated seamlessly into the lighting scheme. The stone portico at Foxholes Care Home in Hitchin, Hertfordshire, is highlighted at its highest level to guide visitors to the entrance. The system operates in two modes: a timed aesthetic scene showcasing the broader landscape, and a reduced dusk-to-dawn setting using select downlighting to ensure safe passage while maintaining a calm nighttime presence. From the portico to the parking area, uplighting of tree canopies paired with 40-foot-high downlights anchors trunks and unifies the ground through soft, dappled shadows, creating a welcoming transition between built and natural environments.

Together, the central and secondary gardens are unified through a consistent lighting strategy that emphasises rhythm, depth, and texture. By illuminating water features, architectural trees, the welcoming portico, formal cypress garden, and intimate globe garden, the project achieves more than illumination—it creates a harmonious network of spaces that evoke mood, celebrate place, and transform the estate into a sanctuary of light and shadow, captivating both the eye and the spirit.
