In the heart of Brussels, next to St. Michael and St. Gudula Cathedral, the Molfar restaurant was created in a 300-year-old building, where Ukrainian creativity, architecture and light came together in a mystical atmosphere. The project has become a symbol of how Ukrainian lighting design can shine in the heart of Europe, emphasising the character of the interior and creating a unique experience for visitors.
The most striking feature of the space is the original light-glass chandelier, created especially for Molfar. Its concept was born from the symbolism of the molfar — a combination of mirrors, fire and plant motifs. Mirrored elements, positioned at different angles, create multiple reflections of ‘fiery’ details, while warm amber hues convey the textures of herbs, smoke and flames. This play of light creates a feeling of cosiness and mystical magic, which is repeated in two chandeliers in the space.
We emphasised the key elements of the interior with accent lighting on vertical surfaces and metal details, added shadow lamps in the bathrooms for the magic of shadows, and highlighted the textures of wood with amber gradients. Integrated biodynamic lighting changes the atmosphere of the establishment throughout the day, and the caustic light sculpture ‘cigar’ creates the effect of smoke and waves on the walls and ceiling. All lamps are custom-made and integrated into our Cloud Control cloud system, which allows you to control lighting from anywhere in the world.
Statement of Impact: The project creates a unique emotional experience, transforming the interior into a dynamic and mystical space where light changes the atmosphere throughout the day. Lighting solutions highlight architectural details, create a sense of comfort and magic, and the integration of innovative biodynamic and accent lighting enhances guests’ emotional connection to the space. Molfar demonstrates that Ukrainian lighting design can influence global culture, inspire and unite people anywhere in the world.
