Marc Chagall’s world exists between heaven and earth – in a state of hovering, where memories and dreams intertwine and reality loses its power. The heroes in the paintings do not submit to gravity. They strive to rise to the bright world of spirituality and clarity. In the exhibition space, the exhibits become part of a single movement – a contemplative flight, where the viewer experiences a miracle together with the artist. Here, among the floating images, fragments of Marc Chagall’s life revive: memories of childhood, love, his hometown.
Each exhibition hall features a unique light and shadow composition. It highlights the architecture and narrative of every single room. In the colonnade, the gliding light reflects a sense of flight. At the brightest point of this movement’s culmination is Chagall’s central work, the first thing we see upon entering the exhibition. In the Jewish theater hall, lighting helps create the feeling of a stage. Large works, flooded with light, are the main characters on the theatre stage, the oblique rays on the architectural elements are a reference to the slightly open curtain of the stage. In the final, tragic hall, the contrasting, dramatic lighting focuses visitors’ attention solely on the works. It feels as if the paintings are suspended in a pernicious darkness.
The viewer experiences with the artist not only the wonders of his world, but also his earthly existence – tremulous moments that have become part of art.
