The lighting design of the Dockyard creates an elegant open space, enhancing the interior material and creating focal points in the space. The interplay of interior design and lighting design results in a fully integrated, holistic solution. The decision not to illuminate the art piece in the center creates a special moment of second reflection in the mirrored envelope.
The diffuse light setting and hidden luminaires create a calm and elegant space, which is defined by the illuminated surrounding walls. Using primarily 3000K and CRI>90 allows the materials to shine in their true appearances and emphasizes the interior design decisions. The luminous sky of the grid ceiling was achieved despite the installation challenges and minimal recess depth. Several studies were conducted to find the best compromise for the final design. Singular Spotlights enhance focal points. The coordination of all disciplines allows a crisp and clean appearance from all viewing angles. This ensures that the visitor has a comfortable and cohesive experience throughout the space.
The project respected the overall environmental impact on material detailing and resources and achieved LEED Platinum. This design questions the need to light everything, instead choosing to tastefully leave some key areas with only ambient light, rather than an additional layer of illumination. This project can drive the industry to reconsider the holistic approach and not only light levels in calculations as bench mark.
This project exemplifies the importance of good communication and collaboration between all parties involved in the design process. The collaboration between client, architect, interior designer, lighting designer, and contractor was our key to success in creating a timeless space through a clean, fully integrated solution.
The Dockyard lobby embodies the phrase “less is more.” In the vibrant, urban environment, this lobby invites us to slow down and focus on what comes next. It is a place to remember.
