ProductMonirManufacturerIndependentDesignerRahi Seyedi
Monir was born from the observation of one of nature’s most poetic events: the glow of the moon suspended between the dark earth and the infinite night sky. Unlike the sharp, technical light of most lamps, moonlight is gentle, ambient, and emotional. It does not command attention; it creates atmosphere. Monir seeks to translate that experience into an everyday object that can live on a desk, bedside, or lounge, turning a universal memory into a tactile daily ritual.
The design embodies this narrative through form. The grounded base, in dark recycled aluminium, symbolizes the stability of the earth. Above it rises a dome-like body, recalling the curve of the heavens. At the center, a translucent bio-based polycarbonate diffuser represents the moon, radiating soft, low-glare light evenly across the environment. This tripartite composition—earth, sky, and moon—anchors the lamp in both symbolism and geometry, giving it an archetypal presence that feels timeless yet modern.
Interaction is deliberately reduced to its essence. The lamp avoids visible switches or clutter, favouring a seamless, intuitive interface. A light tap on the top powers Monir on or off; a smooth rotation of the same surface adjusts brightness across three distinct levels. The gesture is natural and poetic, closer to interacting with an object of ritual than a piece of hardware. In this way, technology disappears, leaving only the clarity of use and the quiet satisfaction of control.
Functionality is supported by thoughtful engineering. Monir is fully cordless and USB-C rechargeable, offering freedom of placement without cable restrictions. It can move easily from workspace to living area, adapting to different moods and settings. The LED light engine is designed for comfort: color temperature adjustable between 2700–4000 K, CRI ≥ 90, and flicker-free operation. The diffuser geometry ensures a gentle halo with minimal glare, supporting both task and ambient use.
Sustainability is embedded in the concept rather than added as an afterthought. The structural components are recycled aluminium, infinitely recyclable without loss of quality. The diffuser is bio-based polycarbonate, derived from renewable feedstocks to reduce reliance on fossil resources. Components are modular and serviceable, designed for disassembly and recycling at the end of the lamp’s life. Longevity, efficiency, and repairability are part of its DNA, reflecting a responsible approach to design in today’s world.
Ultimately, Monir is not just a lamp but a bridge between technology and poetry. It transforms the abstract beauty of moonlight into a functional, tactile, and sustainable object. It celebrates atmosphere without distraction, geometry without excess, and interaction without complexity. In the spirit of [d]arc awards, Monir demonstrates how decorative lighting can move beyond ornament to become an emotional experience: a luminous companion that connects people to nature, memory, and calm.
