Reborn within a historic five-story townhouse in New York’s Upper East Side, a uniquely chic retail experience awaits at Lalique Maison d’Artiste. This immersive retail and lifestyle flagship for Lalique required intentional lighting to cultivate a chic environment while spotlighting the magnificent collections of objet d’arte.
At the entrance, decorative glass displays glow from linear fixtures recessed into the wall, calibrated to enhance texture and color without glare. A glass vase illuminated from below integrates function into the art. The Salon d’Exploration greets visitors with a crystal panel wall which was lit so that the intricate carvings are clear and produce an expanded depth effect. To achieve this, while minimizing hotspots and shadowing, we performed extensive tests and calculations; resulting in a lightbox where the panels are edge-lit and painted behind with a vignette of 20% and 10% grays. This detail marks a new direction for the brand by developing a standard, scalable mounting system with an Italian fabricator that is available for purchase by the clients. Developed specifically for this crystal panel piece the structure was extensively studied to create the optimum color refraction and depth for maintenance and accessibility.
In the Iconic Collections, pinhead accents target individual art pieces, ensuring every object commands attention. Overhead track lighting delivers a soft, even ambient wash, marrying retail clarity with the warmth of a residential environment. Pin lights integrated in the shelving are precisely aimed to carve dimension into each crystal surface, creating museum-quality shadow play. The Lalique Art Gallery, which houses the largest Lalique art gallery to date, illuminated art with track lighting from above while mirrored pedestals bounce light back from underneath. Beam studies allowed us to prevent the mirrors from causing glares. The combination of top and bottom light give the glass a floating, weightless presence.
The lighting throughout the whole space is specifically attuned in both placement and intensity to elevate the textures of a refined residence, allowing guests to visualize the pieces within their own homes.
