This small café-restaurant underwent a complete renovation before being handed over to the Donai Del brand. The brick interior, with over 60 years of history, carries a unique authenticity. The client emphasized preserving the venue’s historical identity while simultaneously creating a warm, inviting, and pleasant atmosphere—one that would evoke a sense of charm and hospitality for both passersby and guests.

Lighting Design Challenges

Due to the historical nature of the building and its structural limitations, there were significant restrictions on lighting installations and wiring. This required a lighting strategy that was efficient, intelligent, and non-intrusive, ensuring the design complemented the existing architecture while enhancing its visual appeal.
Lighting Strategies and Design Approach

1. Enhancing Brick Textures with Grazing Lighting

To highlight the authentic texture and historical character of the brick walls, linear lighting with a CCT of 2000K was applied using the Grazing Lighting technique. This method accentuates depth, shadows, and the richness of the bricks, immersing the space in an atmosphere of nostalgia and authenticity.

2. Creating a Focal Point with Accent Lighting

The illuminated bull head sculpture at the entrance, enhanced through Accent Lighting, serves as a visually striking focal point. This feature draws attention and enhances the restaurant’s identity, making the entrance more inviting and engaging for visitors.

3. Achieving Visual Balance with Glare-Free Pendant Downlights

For table lighting, glare-free pendant downlights were installed. These fixtures provide focused yet comfortable lighting, ensuring a cozy and visually relaxing dining experience without causing discomfort to guests.

4. Layered Lighting in Shelving with Concealed Warm Linear Lights

The shelving units were illuminated using hidden warm linear lights, adding depth and contrast to the space. This approach not only enhances the perception of depth but also creates an intriguing interplay of light and shadow in harmony with the brick textures.

5. Achieving Warmth and Harmony through Indirect Lighting

Soft, indirect warm lighting was incorporated into the surrounding areas to maintain a balanced and inviting atmosphere. This subtle glow fosters a cozy, intimate, and friendly ambiance, leaving guests with a lasting and memorable experience.

Final Outcome

By skillfully integrating accent lighting, texture-enhancing techniques, and indirect illumination, this lighting design preserves the historical character of the space while offering a modern and immersive interplay of light and shadow. The result is a seamless fusion of heritage and contemporary aesthetics, making Donali Del Café-Restaurant a distinctive and unforgettable destination for those who appreciate unique and atmospheric dining experiences.
