Christie’s Asia Pacific headquarters, located within The Henderson—a 36-storey architectural landmark by Zaha Hadid Architects—establishes a new benchmark for art and luxury collecting in Hong Kong’s Central district. Designed by Collective, the 50,000-square-foot space spans the 6th to 9th floors, featuring a saleroom, museum-standard galleries, client lounges, and open offices. Our lighting design enhances this prestigious environment, ensuring both functionality and aesthetic refinement, while seamlessly integrating into the architectural and curatorial vision of the project.

Adaptive Illumination

The open galleries on the 6th and 7th floors employ a flexible lighting system to accommodate diverse exhibitions. Adjustable and dimmable fixtures allow seamless transitions between different display settings, ensuring artworks and luxury objects are showcased in optimal light. This dynamic approach integrates discreetly into the architecture, while ceiling-mounted light tracks support both new and existing fixtures, fostering sustainability through adaptive reuse.

Illuminated Staircase Vitrines

A highlight of the headquarters is the striking staircase vitrine for high-value objects. This parametric glass showcase features a fluid display platform illuminated by strategically placed mini-spotlights. Integrated lighting enhances Christie’s exceptional pieces, while backlighting softens shadows, adhering to professional display standards. Adjustable spotlights ensure uniform illumination, allowing quick modifications based on operational needs. The lighting follows the curves of the vitrine’s surface, maintaining precise aiming on each displayed item. The staircase, linking the 6th to 8th floors, is a luminous journey framed by illuminated displays, culminating in a grand ceiling feature reminiscent of a skylight.

User-Centric Smart Controls

Our lighting solutions prioritize user adaptability. Thoughtfully placed control panels and wireless connectivity allow curators and the operations team to tailor lighting to each event or exhibit. Shelf lighting is meticulously designed for even illumination, accentuating materiality while offering flexibility for future display adjustments. The 8th-floor Client Hub incorporates dimmable walls, ensuring a versatile backdrop for future art installations.

Sustainable and Energy-Efficient Solutions

Aligned with The Henderson’s commitment to sustainability, our lighting integrates energy-efficient fixtures and automated control systems that adjust brightness based on occupancy and daylight availability. This strategy reduces energy consumption while maintaining optimal illumination, supporting the building’s LEED Platinum certification.

Integration with Architectural Aesthetics

The Henderson’s distinctive fluted glass façade, inspired by the bauhinia bud, casts intricate light and shadow patterns throughout the interiors. Our lighting design enhances this natural interplay, providing subtle illumination that harmonizes with the building’s organic forms. By balancing daylight and artificial lighting, we ensure continuity between interior and exterior aesthetics, enriching the architectural vision.

Through this meticulously crafted lighting strategy, we have created a versatile, immersive environment that aligns with Christie’s vision of a one-stop hub for art and luxury collecting. Our approach seamlessly integrates functional precision with artistic sensitivity, ensuring that every visitor experiences the space in its finest light.
