This gathering space explores contrasts—light versus dark, static versus dynamic, embrace versus release—through thoughtful intention that complements the architectural goals. Inspired by the regional landscape and culture, the design evokes familiar imagery: sparks of light against dark backdrops, fringes and lassos, and the warm inviting glow of a campfire. The primary challenge was achieving a cohesive lighting language that unified these contrasting elements while maintaining clarity, flexibility, and long-term maintainability.
Each floor posed unique design challenges that required tailored lighting solutions. The ground floor, anchored by exhibition halls, needed high visibility and uniform brightness while avoiding glare in expansive, multi-use spaces. The solution: a balance of broad, diffused lighting and localized accents to improve navigation and user comfort. as its anchor, features uniform, bright lighting that encourages an energetic atmosphere. The second floor is dedicated to meeting rooms. With a businesslike, subdued character, lighting accents key surfaces for wayfinding and respite. The third-floor ballrooms needed to support a wide range of events, from formal galas to dynamic performances, calling for a layered lighting approach that emphasized contrast and flexibility. Reflective chandeliers and perimeter lighting define the space’s grandeur while maintaining visual adaptability. Throughout, architectural lighting integrates seamlessly, while decorative elements provide identity and break up large volumes to maintain human scale.
Sustainability and energy performance drove every lighting decision. The project required achieving ambitious energy targets while preserving aesthetic intent and user experience. An advanced controls strategy was implemented incorporating occupancy/vacancy sensors, timeclock controls, and indirect reflected lighting, reducing overall energy demand without sacrificing impact. The interior lighting system outperforms energy code requirements by 53%, demonstrating a commitment to efficiency without compromise.
By integrating aesthetic precision, functional clarity, and environmental responsibility, this lighting design resolves complex architectural challenges with refined execution. Its layered contrast and regional storytelling create an atmosphere that is both engaging and timeless, setting a new benchmark for convention center lighting.
