Illuminating Soundscapes: Immersive Light Art for the Ceramophone.

Artin were invited to collaborate on an installation for Solus Ceramics’ “Sounds of the Earth” event series exploring relationships between sound, space, and materials.

Led by Architect Simon Astridge and Music Producer James Mason, we designed an interactive lighting experience to accompany the Ceramophone—a new musical instrument they created with tuned porcelain tile keys.

Our lighting served as a vivid, electric backdrop highlighting Astridge and Mason’s Ceramophone during a series of talks, interactions and performances. We built a lighting control system taking live audio feed from the instrument’s microphones, converting it into instant, captivating animations inspired by psychedelic light shows. Instead of generic audio-reactive scenes, we created visuals attuned to the Ceramophone’s timbre, tonality and dynamics, making the light feel like it bounced and glistened along with whoever was playing the Ceramophone.

Lighting was a fundamental aspect of the original concept as the piece was designed to be inclusive for all types of viewers. Visually depicting the movement of the sound with light, viewers who didn’t have the capability of hearing the ceramaphone had the opportunity to see the translation of sound to light on the backdrop canvas.

Our interactive lighting experience provided an electric backdrop to the twelve events spanning three months. The installation sparked conversations around sound’s impact of sound on wellbeing, behaviour and emotion and looked to draw people in Clerkenwell and beyond to the Solus Showroom and helped to promote them as a true industry leader with their ear to the ground to what leading professional Architects and Interior Designers look for In materials to inspire and use within their projects.
