‘Guest’s shadow through the paper screen – I sit dreaming over charcoal fumes’

DREAMERS is the largest outdoor artwork of UK emerging light and text artist, Elisa Artesero. It is a sculptural space for visitors to explore and become a part of the work as either participant or viewer.

Giant steel and mirror letters are scattered across the grass with a huge 12m long and 3m high shadow projection screen. A light wash from behind the letters casts their shadows onto the screen to spell the word ‘DREAMERS’. Visitors exploring the space become the ‘dreamers’, and their shadows animate the piece to create a bold light and shadow play for other visitors to watch from the other side of the screen.

Japanese aesthetics and Zen poetry influence and run through a lot of Artesero’s work. The paper screens that divide rooms in traditional Japanese homes inspired the screen element of the installation.

Originally commissioned by Artichoke for Lumiere Durham 2015, nearly 200,000 festival visitors came to become ‘dreamers’ to weave their paths around the letters and cast their fleeting shadow onto the screen.

Over the course of the weekend there were kisses, tugs of war, hugs, bicycles, umbrellas and dance routines in this interactive installation.

Elisa said of the work: “DREAMERS is about being in the moment and having fun. You can become a ‘dreamer’ and walk, dance and play in the space, or a ‘viewer’ and watch the shadow performances from the other side. The screen provides a certain amount of anonymity, so it brings out the extrovert of even the shiest visitor.

“The imagination of people playing in the installation was fantastic. Visitors spent a good half hour trying out different ways of interacting with it. It’s wonderful to see a space filled with such laughter and joy; definitely one of the reasons I do what I do.”
